What makes a tasting worth booking here
Saint-Émilion is not short of places to pour you a glass. Nearly 900 châteaux welcome visitors across its vineyards, and the rules differ from one estate to the next, with some open only by reservation.23 That choice is good news, but it also means your first job is to decide what kind of tasting you want before you start comparing names.
Think in three questions. How long do you have, how far will you travel from the village, and do you want the cellar and the vines explained or simply the wine in the glass? A short estate visit suits a free afternoon in town. A visit with a walk or a picnic takes most of a morning. A tour from Bordeaux takes the driving and the planning off your hands, and leaves you free to enjoy every glass.
The Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellations cover red wine only; a rosé or a white made here carries a different name.4 In the blend, Merlot holds pride of place, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon beside it.5 Expect your host to talk about soil, slope and the year of the harvest as much as about the glass in your hand, and ask questions: that conversation is half of what you pay for.
Short tastings on estates near the village
If you are already in Saint-Émilion and want the wine without giving up a whole morning, the short estate visits are the place to start. Château Saint Georges - Côte Pavie runs a 1 hour visit with a guided walk and a tasting, from $18, rated 4.80 from 626 reviews. The estate is a Grand Cru Classé in the 2022 classification.1 You must be over 18 to take part in its tasting.
For more glasses in a little more time, a family estate at Château Haute-Nauve pours 4 wines in a visit of 75 minutes, from $19, with a rating of 4.98 from 250 reviews. When you weigh up the best wineries to visit in Saint-Émilion, a small family house that explains its own wines deserves a place on your list next to the famous names, and it often feels more personal than a polished visitor center.
The classified option close to town meets at the reception of Château Tour Baladoz, by the modern La Croizille winery, about 3 km from Saint-Émilion. It lasts 1 hour, starts from $24, runs in French, English and Spanish, and is listed as wheelchair accessible. Tour Baladoz and La Croizille are both Grands Crus Classés in the 2022 classification.16

Longer visits with a walk or a picnic
If an hour feels rushed, add time among the vines. The vineyard walking tour at Château Haute-Nauve lasts 2 hours, keeps the group to 10 and starts from $29; it holds a rating of 4.96 from 415 reviews. The estate sits 3 km from the village, and the operator recommends that you arrive by car. Plan who drives back before the first glass is poured.
The picnic visit pairs Château Tour Baladoz with nearby Château La Croizille. You begin with 15 minutes at Tour Baladoz, spend 45 minutes on a guided tour and tasting at La Croizille, then sit down for a 1 hour picnic back at Tour Baladoz. It runs 2 hours in all, from $56, for up to 10 people. It is an unhurried way to taste a classified wine.
Check your diet before you book the picnic: the operator notes that it has no gluten-free bread. For a sit-down pairing, some châteaux offer tastings with food and wine pairings.8 Ask the estate what comes with the glass when you reserve, and whether you can buy the bottle you liked best at the end, since carrying a case back to your hotel is easier to plan in advance.

Using the classification as a shortlist
The Saint-Émilion classification is a handy filter when the estate names mean nothing to you yet. The 2022 edition is the seventh since 1955 and lists 85 properties, with 2 Premiers Grands Crus Classés A, 12 Premiers Grands Crus Classés and 71 Grands Crus Classés.16 The A rank went to Château Figeac and Château Pavie.17 For planning visits, the longer list of Grands Crus Classés is the more practical one.
The wine council stresses that it ranks crus, not only wines, and the list is revised every ten years.718 For a visitor, a classified name is a quick signal of an estate's standing, not a promise that you will prefer its glass to the one poured by an unclassified neighbor. Taste with an open mind, and let your own palate have the final word on which house you remember.
Keep the appellation apart from the ranking. Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru cover the same ground, but the Grand Cru rules ask for lower yields and set aging and control requirements.19 Only the Grand Cru appellation carries the titles Grand Cru classé and Premier Grand Cru classé.20 On a label, then, look for both words: the appellation tells you the rules, the ranking tells you the estate.
Cellars, crémant and tasting in town
Much of the drama here happens underground. If you picture a Saint-Émilion wine tasting in a cellar, bring a layer: the tourist office puts the temperature in the underground monuments and certain cellars at around 13°C.15 Barrel rooms and stone galleries make memorable photos, but the chill reaches you faster than you expect after a sunny walk through the lanes.
Not everything poured in town is red. Crémant de Bordeaux has been made in the heart of the village since the 19th century, including in the old quarries of the former Franciscan monastery at the Cloître des Cordeliers.21 A glass of bubbles makes a light start before a session of serious reds, and the cloister itself is a pleasant place to sit for a moment between visits.
You can also taste without joining a tour. Some estates and establishments in the village pour without a full visit, and the Maison du Vin de Saint-Emilion runs an introductory tasting with a presentation of the vineyard, bookable freely from July to October and on request the rest of the year.2223 Bottles can be bought directly from estates, wine shops and the Maison des Vins.24
Booking ahead, children and dogs
Book before you travel. Visiting rules differ between estates and some only open by reservation, and the small-group tastings on this page cap their numbers: 8 at Saint Georges - Côte Pavie, and 10 on the Haute-Nauve walk and on the picnic visit.3 A fixed time slot also makes it easier to plan lunch and the rest of your day around the tasting.
Families should read each listing closely. The tourist office notes that some estates offer family-friendly visits, but admission for children and the facilities vary from one estate to another.25 Château Saint Georges - Côte Pavie requires guests to be over 18 for the tasting itself, and the half-day tour from Bordeaux does not take children under 4.
Dogs are welcome at some estates, though the conditions again depend on the property, and the half-day tour from Bordeaux does not allow pets.26 Free cancellation up to 24 hours before applies to each tasting listed in the table, which leaves room to move a slot if the weather turns or your plans change.
When the tasting comes with the drive
Without a car, a tour that combines transport and tasting is the simpler choice. The half-day tour sold on this site leaves from the Monument aux Girondins in Bordeaux and spends 75 minutes on a guided walk in the village and 75 minutes at a Grand Cru Classé château, where you taste 3 to 4 wines with an aperitif platter. Prices begin at $96, with a 4.77 score from 1,733 reviews.
Other operators build the day around more estates. The full day with tastings and lunch from Olala Bordeaux stops at four vineyards, one of them for a picnic, from $179. The half-day village tour that leaves from the central Bordeaux tourism office spends 1 hour at a classified-growth winery, from $110.
Whichever route you take, taste slowly. Hold the glass by its foot so your hand does not warm the wine, and keep your sips small: a small mouthful is enough to pick up the four basic flavors of bitter, acidic, sweet and salty.2728 The wine council gives 18°C as the ideal serving temperature for a Saint-Émilion, worth remembering when you open a bottle at home.29
